Where the hotel room becomes part of the artwork.
Developed in partnership with Midnight Hotel, part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection, it all began with a simple question: what if art in a hotel could do more than decorate the room?
Seven original Tommy Balogh works were brought together within a single suite, including the large-scale Goddesses Dance. Selected light-reactive pieces were paired with colour-adjustable illumination, allowing guests to alter the atmosphere throughout their stay. As the light changes, new colours, forms and details emerge, giving the artworks a different presence from one moment to the next.
That element of discovery is central to the experience. Rather than encountering a static collection, guests are invited to experiment with the light and see how the room responds. The technology remains secondary; what matters is the subtle shift from simply looking at art to actively experiencing it.
For Tommy, this hotel art installation became a seed project for a different kind of hospitality environment, where art, lighting and interior space operate as one. It also raised a broader question: how can a hotel room create a memory that feels specific to that place, rather than simply being beautifully designed?
Supported by the ACT Government’s Tourism Product Development Fund, the suite attracted attention across both hospitality and arts media, with coverage from Travel Monitor, eGlobal Travel Media, OutInCanberra and About Regional. The response reflected something larger than the suite itself: growing interest in how art-led experiences can give hotels a more distinctive sense of place.
The suite itself became a working example of what happens when artwork stops being an amenity and starts becoming part of the stay itself.
